The Complete South Carolina Moving Checklist

Relocating to Upstate South Carolina involves more than finding the right house — there’s a whole logistics chain that runs alongside your home search, and buyers who get ahead of it have a much smoother transition than those who scramble in the final weeks. I put this checklist together from the questions I field most often from relocating clients, organized by timeline so you know what to tackle when.

Two to Three Months Before Your Move

Start researching Upstate SC communities in earnest if you haven’t already — Spartanburg County and Greenville County each offer very different lifestyles depending on the specific area, and narrowing your search early saves time later. Begin the mortgage pre-approval process with a lender so you have a clear, verified budget before you start touring homes. If you’re selling a home in your current location, this is also the time to interview listing agents and get your own home on the market or ready to list.

Request quotes from moving companies if you’re using professional movers, particularly for long-distance moves where availability can book up during peak moving season in the spring and summer.

One Month Before

If you haven’t already, submit your mortgage application in full and begin actively touring homes if you’re relocating from a distance, planning a dedicated house-hunting trip if needed. Start collecting quotes for homeowners insurance on any property you’re seriously considering — this needs to be in place before closing.

Begin the process of transferring or establishing utility service for your new home — electric, water, gas, internet, and trash service all need to be set up, and providers vary by specific municipality and county in the Upstate. Notify your current utility providers of your move-out date.

Start collecting important documents you’ll need for the move: school records if you have children transferring, medical and veterinary records, and any documents your closing attorney or lender has requested.

Two Weeks Before

Submit a change of address with USPS, and update your address with your bank, credit card companies, insurance providers, and any subscriptions or services tied to your current address. Notify your employer of your move if relevant to your work arrangement.

If you’re bringing a vehicle, research South Carolina’s registration and driver’s license transfer requirements — the state gives new residents 90 days to complete this, but knowing the required documents ahead of time (proof of residency, current registration, insurance) makes the DMV visit faster.

Confirm your closing date and timeline with your closing attorney, and confirm your moving company’s arrival dates align with your closing and possession timeline.

Moving Week

Confirm all details with your movers, or finalize your packing plan if you’re moving yourself. Pack an essentials box with medications, chargers, basic toiletries, a few days of clothing, and important documents that you’ll want immediate access to rather than buried in a moving truck.

Do a final walkthrough of your current home before handing over keys, and coordinate the timing of your final walkthrough of your new South Carolina home before closing.

After You Arrive

Register to vote in South Carolina if you plan to make it your permanent residence. Transfer your driver’s license and vehicle registration within the 90-day window South Carolina requires. Find local healthcare providers, and if you have children, complete school enrollment promptly using the documentation you gathered before the move.

Take some time to actually explore your new community. One of the most common pieces of advice I give relocating clients is not to let the logistics of the move consume all your energy — leave room to enjoy discovering your new home.
